The non-governmental organization Pro-Indian Commission of São Paulo was founded in 1978 by a group of anthropologists, lawyers, doctors, journalists, and students to defend the rights of indigenous peoples facing growing threats from the dictatorship then in power in Brazil.

In its 30 years of existence, CPI-SP has worked with indigenous peoples and quilombolas (descendents of escaped African slaves) to achieve guarantees of their land, cultural, and political rights, seeking to contribute to the strengthening of democracy and the recognition of the rights of ethnic minorities.
